Scott has been involved in criminal law since 1988, first as a police officer and then as a police prosecutor. While fulfilling the role of police prosecutor Scott studied for his legal qualifications at the Legal Practitioners Admission Board, completing his Dip Law in 2001.

Scott was admitted as a solicitor in 2002 and immediately went to practice with Legal Aid NSW. Over a period of 8 years Scott worked in a various sections of Legal Aid NSW including as a Senior Trial Advocate within the Criminal Law Division personally conducting District Court trials and sentences, amongst other matters.

Scott has also personally conducted District Court trials as a Trial Advocate with the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Along with his criminal law experience as a prosecutor and defence counsel Scott has fulfilled the role of Counsel Assisting the State Coroner of Western Australia during 2010 conducting a number of public inquests into unnatural deaths.

As a senior solicitor at the NSW Legal Representation Office Scott has also appeared at the Independent Commission Against Corruption, Police Integrity Commission as a solicitor assisting a judicial member at the Administrative Decisions Tribunal.

During 2005/7 Scott was Director of Investigations at the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission where he obtained substantial experience in the investigation and prosecution of disciplinary matters.
