Experience

Maclaren accepts briefs in most areas of law. He has a particular focus on criminal law, administrative law, environmental law and coronial inquests. 

Maclaren is an experienced advocate who previously oversaw a busy criminal caseload as a defence lawyer at the NT Legal Aid Commission in Alice Springs. He held various roles at the NSW and ACT offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions, including as a specialist family violence prosecutor. His experience includes appearing unled in summary hearings, led and unled in jury trials and appellate work involving complex factual and legal issues.

Prior to joining the Bar, Maclaren was a Senior Solicitor in the Inquiries and Criminal Law Division at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office. He assisted the NSW State Coroner and Deputy State Coroners in coronial inquests involving sudden, unexpected or unexplained deaths across the state.

Maclaren has previously volunteered at the Environmental Defenders Office. He currently acts as a casual academic at Macquarie University and is a Councillor of the Art Gallery Society of NSW.
